ICEE (the International Centre for Eyecare Education - pronounced “I See”) is an Australian based not for profit, non government organisation that is helping to bring much needed eye care within reach of people around the world.
For 10 years ICEE has worked to provide underserved communities, in Australia and 40 other countries, with access to vision care to help reduce poverty.
ICEE provides effective, affordable and sustainable eye care programmes by investing in local people, eye health education and the future of eye care access.
The programmes’ ICEE initiates are aimed at building skills and knowledge, creating employment opportunities, enlisting governments and communities to support eye care systems and enhancing community and individual confidence.
Our programmes are designed to empower local people and communities to create solutions for eye care needs.
Training local practitioners to perform eye care services builds a self-sustaining system and gives local people ownership of the whole process.
At ICEE we know that a pair of glasses and access to eye care means improved performance at school, increased employment opportunities and, ultimately, a higher quality of life.
The ICEE mission is to help eliminate avoidable blindness and impaired vision, particularly due to “uncorrected refractive error” (needing glasses to see). We work in collaboration with the community and with other organisations to target local needs, including:
Immediate care
- Eyecare services: We provide eye examinations, glasses and referrals to answer the immediate needs of disadvantaged communities.Sustainable services
- Education: We increase the number of eye care practitioners available for communities in need by training and equipping practitioners and educators. We also aim to improve the knowledge and skills of existing practitioners and educators with professional education, and to raise eye health awareness within local communities.- Infrastructure: We are developing systems to distribute affordable spectacles in developing countries. We help to establish eye clinics and training facilities to foster ongoing eye care services.
Through strong partnerships with Aboriginal Medical Services, ICEE works in 89 communities in New South Wales and regularly visits 23 locations in the Northern Territory of Australia.
